Drawing with Vic and Ed
(2025, 176 pages with a hint of colour, $19.95, 6 inches wide by 8.75 inches high, printed in Toronto on beautiful laid paper)
"Vic and Ed" were Queen Victoria (who reigned from 1837 to 1901) and her son Edward VII (1901 to 1910). This was the heyday of political and social cartoons in Britain's Punch magazine, and Drawing with Vic and Ed compiles some of the best cartoons and drawings from that publication and elsewhere by Harry Furniss, Bernard Partridge, E.T. Reed, Arthur Rackham, George du Maurier, Phil May, Charles Keene and others. In a foreword, Dr. Simon Cooke (senior editor for book illustration and design on the Victorian Web) writes, "The Victorians and Edwardians didn't mind laughing at themselves, and the Punch cartoonists made sure that nobody was let off the hook." The thirteen main cartoonists each get an introduction from compiler Warren Clements. "Harry Furniss (1854-1925) was an excellent artist and a great storyteller. He was also an endless self-promoter, writing highly readable books of art instruction and memoirs in part so he could have the last word."
